[…] CONVERTING TO SQUARE FOR CREDIT CARD PROCESSING-This is an interesting article, written by a small business owner, explaining why (and how) she chose to forgo the traditional credit card processing route, and switch to Square. Here’s a hint: fees. The author also details a few other payment systems, such as Google Wallet and Dwolla. Have you ever thought about changing payment methods for your small business? If not, what would it take for you to convert? […]

We switched to Square about 18 months ago and love it. I am saving HUGE every day I process with Square. The banks and traditional processors are on a campaign against this truly disruptive technology and game changer. I've had many clients tell me their bank said, "Don't switch to Square because..." and then proceed to give any number of false statements, half truths or other reason not to take your business elsewhere.

I do believe that Sqaure's lifespan is going to be short lived though...that is until someone else comes up with something even better. In the mean time, I saved about $15,000 last year by switching!!!

I blogged about my experience here - http://www.coffeegroot.com/2011/12/how-to-guaranteed-slash-your-processing-fees-in-half/.

Just received an email with the heading "Square rate too high?" It's a traditional merchant processor advertising their low swiped rate. No word on their monthly fees, add-on fees, statement fees, etc. In fact, be sure you find out your effective rate, not just the swiped rate. Because those two are very, very, very different things.

I also notice this company is trying to make their name sound similar to Intuit's respectable GoPayment. I give the email three out of four stars for a scummy solicitation trying to take advantage of small businesses. Be wary!

I live in Des Mines where Dwolla started, so I've seen first-hand how hard they've worked to make it a convenient, reliable, easy payment alternative. I think it's definitelt a viable solution for my customers + I believe a lot more will use it as they unveil more and more features. I switched to Square as soon as they opened it to iPad (had it for a year, but worried customers would balk at signing a phone for their purchases). With the ability to now use it as a complete POS, I think it's the best choice for small businesses - especially when you add in fees, the cost of Lightspeed and the cost of peripherals. Want to know figure out how to QR code items to have them automatically scan and be entered into a spreadsheet or other filing program.

Love the concept of Dwolla I have an account and they just announced free, no fees for transactions under $10. I think longer term they have a very interesting game changing model.
